you can also browse Deviant art, and if anything takes your fancy, get in contact with the artist and ask for permission to use it. Just provide a link back to them.

Yeah, I love the GIMP. Very easy to use once you get the hang of it.

I'd also like to point out that there are programs that convert images to and from sound. Artists such as Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails have used this process to incorporate hidden images into their songs.

There are also a huge number of images available at the wikimedia commons. This is where I got the source file for the Sunset Bleeds Distortion cover.
